You should trust, but check. Despite the obvious benefits of ratings as a guide for students, experts do not recommend blindly trust the results of the evaluation of universities. “As one of the key indicators of the rating is often used analysis of publications. The international databases, however, have traditionally been more English-language publications, as well as publications in the field of medicine and science,” – said Sonia Berghoff, project manager Research Ranking German Centre for Higher Education (CHE).
It turns out that universities, for example, do not teach medicine and specialize in the humanities, there is little chance of getting into the top ranks rating. According to Sony the Berghof, it would be reasonable to develop a system of evaluation, taking into account other areas of research, as well as taking into account the characteristics of individual countries. “This would make the ratings more objective”, – the expert believes.
“In high school, the rating is important, – says deputy director of the rating agency in the field of education “ReytOR”. Rating is an instrument of political and economic impact. For example, in the case of assigning a high position in the ranking of higher education it may receive additional funding and attract outside investors. ”
Representatives of the German universities believe that the front-runners in the rankings help them attract more students. “We do not keep statistics, but communication with the students shows that many people choose our university because of its high rating,” – said Markus Bernards, an expert on public relations of the Technical University of Munich.
The choice of the future university is rather important issue. Students should take into account any information that can be found in specialized publications that published by rankings. “All primary information allows you to narrow the number of potential higher education institutions and to facilitate the choice. But to rely solely on ratings is not necessary”, – said the expert.
Most often, the applicants seek information about specific training programs or, at least, the individual faculties. And the international rankings, as a rule, assess the university as a whole, – says the expert.
According to experts, global rankings are more a marketing tool that colleges use to strengthen or improve their reputation.
